Daydream Believing and Guest Bathrooms

I’ve shared a time or two (or three) that my house is less than awesome. It’s old and small and evidence that my husband and I were first-time suckers home buyers. But it’s a home, and I work hard to stay positive and thankful for what we have.

My parents, on the other hand, have been fervently and faithfully praying for our new house. They are believing God for the miracle it will take to get us out of our little money pit.I’ve been thinking about guest bathrooms lately – and how much I can’t wait to have one again. We currently have one small bathroom, and it works well enough.

But as someone who enjoys having guests in my home, I long for the day I have a guest room – and bathroom to go with it.

What’s Going On? (Summer Updates)

That’s my daughter giving Donald Duck a fist bump, complete with explosion at the end (or, “‘bloom!” as she says it).

When we went on vacation a couple weeks ago, I thought about re-publishing a couple of my favorite posts. As I looked back through my posts over the past few months, I realized that I’ve left you hanging on quite a few topics. So, because I’m sure (sarcasm font) you have just been dying for updates on my fascinating life, I thought I’d make a list for you.

{You’re welcome.}

1. My father-in-law is finally home from the hospital. Thank you to everyone who prayed for him and left sweet comments. It was a long three weeks, partly because his situation was pretty serious and partly because it meant Mark was at the hospital (and not at home, with us) every second he wasn’t working or sleeping. And, as so many hospital stays do (at least in my experience), it brought up several stressful family issues. So, for several reasons, I’m thankful he’s safe at home!

2. I’m back to saying, “My daughter is such a good eater!” You all had so many great ideas (and strong opinions!) about how to fight Annalyn’s picky eating phase, and I’m happy to say they worked. For the most part, I truly think it was a phase that she just outgrew (kind of like all her clothes, now that she’s back to eating!). But what also helped was allowing her to pick one piece of each food that she doesn’t eat (one bean, one bite of chicken, etc.), or in worse circumstances, allowing her to be finished after just three bites (three bites for three years old).

3. I did complete a 5K. But I barely ran any of it! Once I hit week four or five of my Couch to 5K program, my progress kind of stalled. I went out of town, too, and that pretty much put an end to my momentum. So, as the weeks continued to fly by – and my feet did not – I considered canceling my plans for the 5K. But it turns out, once you register for a 5K, you can’t un-register. So, my brother came down to run/walk with me, and my sister-in-law came down to cheer us on and snap cheesy photos. We mostly walked, but we ran for a few yards. More importantly, we had a great time catching up – and I’m pretty sure, based on my sweaty shirt, I burned some calories anyway.

4. Low-carb is easier and harder than it seems. I managed to eat low-carb (or, for you sticklers, lower carb than normal) for approximately three days. I was amazed at how not-that-hard (I just can’t make myself say “easy.”) it was! And how much better I was eating! And then . . . well, I fell off the wagon, as per usual. I want to give it another try. Maybe I’ll start today . . .

5. I’m still not an early bird. At the moment I’m writing this, it’s 11:30 at night and I literally (yes, literally) just said to a friend on Skype, “I should go to bed now.” And yet, here I am. Blogging, Skyping and watching a TV movie on Lifetime. That I’ve already seen. I know. I know. Just go to bed! I hear you. And I should. I’m in a horrible cycle of staying up late/sleeping as late as possible/being super tired/napping/staying up late again. I’d like to tell you that I’m going to break that cycle tomorrow, but, well, the fact is I enjoy my night owl-ness. So, there it is.

6. I bought a baby book! Okay, so maybe I haven’t written anything in it yet. But I bought it!

7. Good Enough is still the new perfect. When I read and reviewed this book, my plan was to hold a discussion each weekend of summer based on a chapter of the book. Yes, I do realize that it is July. So, this might end up being a fall thing. I’m not sure. But it will be good enough, I’m sure of that. (Get it? “Good enough?” Okay. Yeah.)

8. I have not yet written an e-book. This may not be a surprise, since if and when I write anything you will most certainly know about it. When I mentioned, in passing, that I was going to write an e-book about how to throw a party without losing your mind, I meant it. I had several pages of ideas and a rough draft of a cover. But since then, I’ve had major doubts – about the topic, the process, my writing, my qualifications. So, without going further into a pity party (ugggggh. Pun not intended!), I haven’t written an e-book yet.

9. There’s too much good TV on this summer! Did you ever think you’d hear me say that? It’s true, though. I need my TV to have more junk and reruns and fewer new shows. It’s really the only way I’ll put down the remote and get some things done! Until that happens, though (I anticipate a TV drought come mid- to late-August.), I’m enjoying White Collar, Franklin & Bash, Burn Notice and a Hulu Plus membership. And I’m looking forward to catching up on So You Think You Can Dance and the new season of Warehouse 13. And, oh yeah, organizing my cabinets or weeding the front yard. Something productive like that. In August.

10. I’m accepting new ads for the month of July or the entire third quarter of the year (July – September). If you have a business or a blog you’d like to promote to all the wonderful readers of this blog, please e-mail me about prices!

So, tell me: What have YOU been up to lately? Any updates or news to share?

Top 10 Shows I’ve Watched During Rerun Season

brilliant but canceled

Several months ago, somewhere in between the holiday specials that run incessantly from Halloween on and the debut of new shows and return of old favorites, I found myself lost in Rerun Land.

Not only lost in a full line-up of repeats, but without a remote because my husband was holding it hostage. Never did I imagine I’d long for the days of Pawn Stars and Mythbusters, but when even ridiculous reality television shows went on hiatus, my husband resorted to watching shows about a crazy exterminator in Louisiana, Vanilla Ice flipping houses and some angry men cutting down trees.

It was a dark time.

As I endured cursing loggers and handy rappers, I wondered why I was so incredibly irritated by the lack of good TV. And then I remembered: When rerun season has hit in the past, I’ve taken the opportunity to watch through canceled TV shows I missed when they first aired.

Actually, that’s how I’ve found some of my favorite TV shows! Some of my favorites (so far) are:

  1. Arrested Development (I need to watch this one again, now that I think about it.)
  2. Freaks & Geeks (If you’ve been around for a while, you might remember my slight obsession with this one.)
  3. The Middleman (Very quirky and, possibly, very nerdy. But yeah, I loved it.)
  4. Better Off Ted (It’s a little bit like a mash-up of The Office and Arrested Development. And it’s a lot [dark and] hilarious.)
  5. Firefly (Look, I know “space cowboys” sounds like a joke…or a Joker, get it?!…but I’m very serious about how great this show is!)
  6. Veronica Mars (season one – after I’d already watched the other two seasons. This made everything make so much more sense!)
  7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (season one – and I’ll admit, I loved it. But one season was enough.)
  8. Warehouse 13 (season one – just in time to watch the second season last summer!)
  9. Felicity (Watching these slightly out of order, as reruns, was crazy confusing. But still so good!)

And last, but most recent, Parks and Recreation. Which is a problem, because this show is still on. And that means I just added another 30 minutes to my already-packed schedule of shows.

I tend to prefer canceled, short-lived series, because the time commitment is small enough to keep me occupied and entertained until my favorite shows have new episodes, but not so long that I have to dedicate months to them. I have friends, though, who have spent many an evening watching the multiple seasons of West Wing, Monk and Psych.

Oh – and I can’t wait to someday watch Friday Night Lights from start to finish. That should keep Swamp People and presidential biographies at bay for a good long time!

What do YOU watch when reruns are on?

Top Ten Clues That I’m a Geek

Well, I guess that picture might be Clue #1. Actually, now that I think about it, I could’ve done a whole photo post thing here and linked up to Wordless Wednesday. Somewhere – buried deep, so don’t even bother looking – I have photos of me with a stack spelling bee trophies, photos in my Camp Fire girls uniform and many photos with many, many bad haircuts. No braces or headgear, but good grief, just look at those glasses!

Today is Geek Pride Day. And while you might think that would be merely a national holiday, I discovered while doing my research yesterday (Clue #2) that the Day of the Geek actually began in Spain in 2006.

Now, before you go acting like my mom and informing me that “geek” means a circus freak who eats chickens or something, let me just stop you. And say, yes, that is where the term originated. But these days, it’s published on Wikipedia commonly accepted that the “definition of geeks remains that of a person engrossed in his area of interest at the cost of social skills, personal hygiene, and status.”

See? No mention of chickens or other circus-freaky things at all!

When I began considering my geek-hood in preparation for this post (Clue #3? Nah…), a list immediately began rolling through my mind:

  • Spelling bee champion – and proud of it (Clue #3 for sure!)
  • Honor student
  • First – and only – chair of the bass clarinet section in the band
  • Captain of the academic team (Clue #4 in a big way. I even wore my glasses to meets to look nerdier smarter.)
  • Valedictorian

(Okay, so that last one doesn’t make me feel like a geek at all. It’s just rare that I get to throw it out there, so I thought I’d take this opportunity. My mom tried to tell me that nobody would care about my class rank once graduation was over, but did I believe her? Nooooo. Did I drop the cool-in-my-school jazz band in favor of the better-for-my-GPA college chemistry class anyway? Yesssss. [I'm going to call that one Clue #5. And sad. Boo.])

But after I worked through my usual list of things that make me a dork, I realized that the definition I was finding elsewhere included a passion and expertise in some area. I started worrying that maybe I’m not a geek after all! (*sigh* I know. Clue #6)

(Okay, so the previously mentioned photos weren't buried so deeply after all...)

Then I calmed down and remembered that while I might not be considered an expert by everyone, I am very geeky when it comes to three things.

1. Grammar. I know I have to call this Clue #7, but the fact is, I love grammar and punctuation and AP Style and using the English language properly. Why is that so weird? Personally, I think it’s normal – and good, yes, GOOD – to enjoy a blog or two about grammar. And to bookmark shops that sell t-shirts with jokes about proofreading. And to put a grammar book on my Amazon wish list. Yep. Totally normal.

2. Blogging. It feels so wrong to say that blogging love and know-how makes me a geek while writing on my blog. But, let’s face it, it’s true. However, considering social media has become a large (and awesome!) part of my life, I’m going to own this, Clue #8, proudly.

3. Television. Okay, so I might still use a VCR, but I am a HUGE geek for TV. (If you’re new here, there’s no “might” about it. I do not have DVR, and I use my 22-year-old VCR on a regular basis. Happily. Despite much Twitter persecution. So there.)

I watch a lot of TV. I read blogs about TV. I write about TV on my blog. I write about TV for other blogs. I listen to podcasts about TV. Basically, I love TV and I know a lot about TV.And even if that doesn’t make me a geek, there’s always what kind of shows I like to watch on TV.

First of all, I love Chuck – a spy show specifically about a nerd. Second of all, I never miss an episode – or rerun, if I can help it – of NCIS, the best show your mom (or grandma) likes. Other (past and present) favorites? Warehouse 13, Firefly, Freaks & Geeks. Need I say more? Clue #9.

As I round out this list of clues that I’m a big ol’ geek, I have so many things competing for #10. I think I’m going to go with my much-documented love of reading. My first job was at a library, and just yesterday I tossed around the idea of going back to school to get my master’s degree in Library Science. (I don’t think that idea will stick, but I’m not completely joking.) I love reading all kinds of books, but lately I’ve been devouring anything involving fantasy, the future, time travel or YA romance – sometimes all in one book.

And in honor of the other holiday being celebrated today, I reserved The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the library.

I’m pretty sure that seals it. I am a geek, yes I am. How about you?

The Best Things about Orange Conference

Oranges

My suitcase was emptied, lint rolled (the cats just cannot resist a purple suitcase) and put away less than a week after I returned home from The Orange Conference. That may not sound like much to you, but take my word for it: That is progress.

I’ve sorted the fliers and souvenirs, and I’ve made note of a few more blog posts I want to write. But before I can get to that, I want to tell you my top ten favorite parts of the whole trip!

1. Staying with Amanda: Amanda and her family took such great care of me, and we had a blast hanging out! Even though it’s fun to see blogging friends at conferences, staying in someone’s house for three days is a completely different – and better! – thing. Especially when you consider how far Amanda’s house was from the conference and therefore, how many hours we spent together in the car, talking, laughing, crying. It was good. I love Amanda and her family – and did I mention she makes a great egg sandwich? Because yeah, she does.

2. Seeing the Sisterchicks and Kathy: In both cases, our visits were cut short – one by impending tornadoes and doom, the other by a crazy busy conference schedule. But eating pizza and amazing cupcakes with Mandi, Becky and Staci was so much fun, and I loved eating a couple meals with Kathy during the conference. (Yes, I have noticed that my favorite things always revolve around food and I’ve decided that I’m okay with it.) I love these girls, and if they could just fix the traffic and the summer heat, I might consider moving down there to hang out all the time!

3. Experiencing a little bit of Atlanta: Thankfully, the three days I was in Atlanta were beautiful – no sign of the muggy heat that the city is known for. I did have the privilege of experiencing its traffic, though. (And if the traffic we saw “wasn’t that bad,” please don’t tell me.) But my favorite part of Atlanta was the OK Cafe, where we ate lunch one day and breakfast another. I may not technically be Southern, but grits, black-eye peas and a bunch of other foods that didn’t need salt (because they were already Southern-seasoned enough!!) Hit. The. Spot.

4. Hearing NEEDTOBREATHE: Not only did I get to see this band in concert at the end of our first day, but I got to listen to them warm up while I wrote a post in the bloggers suite. They ROCKED. I loved them. The end.

5. Jeanne Stevens: Without realizing it, I signed up for three (out of a possible four) breakout sessions by Jeanne. Apparently we have some of the same interests! She was a great speaker, teaching about creativity and leadership in an engaging, heart-moving way.

6. Tons of other great speakers: As a one-time speech teacher, I’m a picky audience member for pretty much any speaker. And I have never been to a conference or event where every speaker hit it out of the park! Perry Noble was by far my favorite, but I also loved Jeff Manion and Carey Neiuwhof, too. (As a matter of fact, I can’t wait to read Carey’s book, Parenting Beyond Your Capacity!)

7. Confirming that ministry, church and work for a cause can be done well. Sharing this thought with Amanda might have been the first (of many) time I cried at Orange. So many things I thought I knew [during our church plant, other ministries and jobs I've had] – and was told I didn’t – turned out to be right. I may have made a lot of mistakes, but I wasn’t wrong about everything. And that was both amazing to hear – and so very hard.

8. Being around so many people who love the Lord and are doing His work. Enough said.

But if you want some details, the Orange website has these stats about the conference: 4700 attendees / 1300 churches / 47 states / 24 denominations / 15 countries / one movement

9. Meeting Yancy and Cory: Amanda’s friends were fun and sweet to let me tag along with their breakfast on Saturday. And the moment I got home, I ordered a Yancy CD for Annalyn!

10. Learning about Orange: Until I met Kathy at this year’s Blissdom, I didn’t know that Orange existed. Now that I do, I really want to have Annalyn in a church that uses this approach.

If you’re wondering what Orange IS, I’m going to borrow from the Orange website. “[Orange is] what happens when you combine yellow (the light of the church) and red (the love of the family) to make a greater impact [and] to work together and show a generation who God is. [Orange is] when church leaders work together to implement a comprehensive strategy from preschool to college to incite wonder, provoke discovery and fuel passion in the hearts of sons and daughters so they can see God for who he is, so they can see themselves the way God sees them [and] so they can love others the way God does.”

Awesome, right?
