Weekend Pins :: Stuff I’ve Done, 12.9.11

See that wreath up there? I made it.

And I tell you what: Every time I walk through my front door, it makes me smile. Not because it’s the fanciest or cutest wreath in the world, but because I made it.

I’m not the craftiest person you’ve ever met on the internet. But with the help of Pinterest and a tutorial labeled with words like “the easy way” and “anyone can do it,” I made a new wreath for our door. Granted, it only involved fabric and scissors, but honestly? Those are two things I really don’t like. They remind me of sewing, and that’s never a pleasant thought.

It really was easy to make. After braving the fabric section – and a surly employee who didn’t care for me calling strips of fabric “scraps” – I found a package of two yards of holiday fabric SCRAPS. I cut them into nowhere-near-uniform strips of about 6″ x 1.5″, and tied them around a stretched-out wire hanger.

Yep. That’s all.

Except, wait! That’s not all! I’ve actually done several things I’ve found on Pinterest, including:

  • I printed and framed that Christmas subway art, and both my daughter and my mom commented on it!
  • And the candy canes hung by ribbon? Well, I pinned that about three times, but I actually loved it even more once I did it in a few spots in my own house.
  • I made the Mickey Mouse rice krispy treats and hung balloons by a string for Annalyn’s birthday party this fall. We loved (okay, a certain four-year-old loved) fingerpainting a fall tree.
  • And while I didn’t wrap up the mountain of Christmas books we own and have checked out from the library, having them on hand and reading a couple each day has been a sweet surprise for my holiday-obsessed kiddo this month!

Do you actually DO the things you pin on Pinterest? What’s been your favorite project so far?

Wordless Wednesday: Farmer’s Market

A couple weeks ago, we went to the farmer’s market with my parents and cousin. It should have been a fun little field trip. Instead, it was a hurried, stressful morning with a cranky kid and even more cranky mom. (That would be me.) We didn’t have much time (after finding parking and the bathroom and my parents, we had about 20 minutes of actual browsing, photographing time). And it was about a million degrees with a million percent humidity.

Okay, I might be exaggerating about the weather (a bit), but we really didn’t have much time to enjoy the place, the company or any of it. I guess this means we’ll have to go back for another try! Until then, here are a few photos I snapped:

Do you visit your local farmer’s market?

How to Make Homemade Play Dough

Several months ago, I wrote about a snow day and asked for suggestions for indoor activities. One of my lovely readers suggested making play dough. I kept that comment in my inbox and finally gave the craft a try a few weeks ago!

We had a blast making the play dough and playing with it. After using our (Christmas) cookie cutters for quite a while and asking me to roll the greasy dough into flowers and people and trees, Annalyn decided to scoop it into a bowl. Then she served it to her dad. (It was an ice cream sundae, of course!)

It didn’t take long to make, and Annalyn loved having fresh play dough (her last few cans of the “real” stuff had long since dried out). Here’s the recipe:

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
3 tablespoons oil
1 pkg. unsweetened Kool-Aid mix
1 cup boiling water

Mix dry ingredients together. Add oil and mix. Pour in 1 cup boiling water.

I actually used a packet of Crystal Light, and it worked just fine. (Well, except that I used a packet of the flavor I didn’t like, not thinking about how that would mean the play dough would then smell exactly like the lemonade I didn’t like. Annalyn didn’t mind, though.)

The recipe makes a lot of dough. Next time I might halve the recipe and use two different colors. But for now, we’re loving our red, lemonade-y play dough!

(One note of caution, though. You might consider putting down wax paper or a placemat if using this on a light-colored wooden table. Unless you like pale pink splotches on your table. Then just slap that dough on the table like I did!)

What craft projects have you worked on this summer?

Wordless Wednesday: Friends & Animals

On Monday, we went to the zoo with one of Annalyn’s friends (and her mom, my friend!). It wasn’t too hot and the girls were in good moods. And the animals were out to play, including a baby orangutan! We had a great time, and I loved seeing the girls’ eyes light up and hearing their giggles for several HOURS straight!

Have you done anything fun this week?

Wordless Wednesday: Green Things

Just a few green things I found around the house (from top left):

  • Green peas for a three-year-old who loves veggies
  • Carnations for a three-year-old who loves flowers (hmm…I’m seeing a pattern here…)
  • Our quickly dwindling cash envelope for groceries
  • Mint chocolate chip cookies
  • Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (SO good and now I can’t wait to get the final book!)
  • Green rice krispy treats
  • LeapFrog alphabet magnet toy on the fridge

Is there anything green around your house today? (Perhaps some flowers or other signs of spring, which I wasn’t able to find?)
