Bringing Home the Bacon

You may have noticed my posting lately has been sporadic. And focused on a random collection of topics. And full of logos and disclosures and fine print.

Are you annoyed, disappointed or otherwise bothered by the abundance of sponsored posts I’ve written lately? I’m sorry, and here’s what happened.

When I’m contacted about participating in a campaign, I don’t always know right away a) when my deadline is or b) whether I’ll be selected for said campaign. So, as opportunities arose this summer, my strategy was basically to agree or apply to everything and wait to see what stuck.

The result? Eight – count ‘em, EIGHT – assignments, due within a couple weeks of each other. *sigh*

I haven’t forgotten – or abandoned – my pledge to focus on real writing. And I realize – or perhaps I’m assuming – that most of you don’t come here to read product reviews. But since I got myself into this unbalanced (although brief and temporary) phase of blogging, I do hope that you’ll learn about something you might be interested in or want to try out!

And even if you haven’t, I hope you’ll hang in here with me. I have a few more fun (yes, sponsored) posts to share with you next week, and then things should be back to normal around here.

Just in case you’ve missed my non-sponsored posts lately, here are a few.

Giving Up on a Perfect {Summer}
Monday Morning Mmmm: Flag Fruit Kebabs
Mighty to Save?
Daydream Believing and Guest Bathrooms
What Notes {and Words} Do You Keep?

And because I’m sure you don’t want to miss all the fun posts on my new TV blog, Mama Loves Her Shows, here are those, too.

And now I have a question for you. Are there any topics you’d like me to write about? Hit me with your best ideas in the comments!

10 Reasons You Should Read My New Blog

Did you hear the news? Yesterday morning, I launched a new blog dedicated to all things television. It’s called Mama Loves Her Shows, and I can’t wait for you to check it out!

[Okay, let's be honest. When I say “check it out,” I mean “bookmark it, subscribe to it, tweet it and tell all your friends – Facebook and otherwise – about it.” Just so we're clear.]

I’m kind of flying by the seat of my pants with this thing, but I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have had an idea and followed through on it! And while things may take a few weeks to get settled and organized just so (you know how I like things organized just so), I’d love you to start reading it now anyway.

10 Reasons You Should Read Mama Loves Her Shows

  1. Reviews from the viewpoint of someone you already know and (I hope) trust.
  2. Recaps of your favorite shows from fellow “TV mamas.”
  3. Regular installments of my favorite game and yours: Celebrity Lookalikes!
  4. TV-themed top 10 posts, such as “10 Annoying Characters Who Grew On Me.”
  5. Relevant, non-trashy TV news (and maybe a little gossip). In other words, I read the TV blogs so you don’t have to.
  6. Promos and picks for the upcoming TV season – and the one after that and the one after that…
  7. Deep questions like, “Whatever happened to Saturday morning cartoons?
  8. Important discussions like, “Whoa! The {embarrassing} TV Crushes of My Youth.”
  9. Repeated references to such important television gems as Saved By the Bell, Dawson’s Creek and ABC Family originals.

And last but not least:  Don’t you want a place to talk TV? To chat about your favorite show or actor? You know you do…

What do you think? Is a TV blog your kind of thing? Or, if you’d rather not answer that one, have you had any ideas lately that you need to follow up on?

10 Tools That Make Social Media Easier

When I started my blog three and a half years ago, I had no idea. I had no idea.

I truly thought I’d simply start up a little website, a place for me to share my thoughts and interact with adults (as opposed to the small person ruling my real life). I had no idea that social media as a whole would completely commandeer my free time, my brain space and my travel budget!

As someone who is easily distracted from life’s necessary but less-than-fun priorities – such as cleaning, grocery shopping and playing yet another round of princess Yahtzee – I’m thankful for the tools that make my social media “work” (as I call it, despite my lack of big paychecks or free cars) more efficient and manageable.

10 Social Media Tools for More Efficiency and Less Stress

1. HootSuite:This online dashboard allows you to publish to several social media websites, including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Most importantly, it allows you to schedule your posts in advance. I think other tools, such as TweetDeck, now offer this function as well. And you can find articles by social media experts who say this is bad practice, but for me, it works. I don’t have a smart phone and it’s not realistic for me to sit at my laptop all day.

I get online first thing in the morning and schedule my tweets and Facebook posts. I include links to my blog post for the day, as well as other articles, giveaways or coupons I think my followers might like. And I go through my Twitter lists and reply to a few people, too, scheduling those responses throughout the day so I’m not sending 15 messages in five minutes!

2. Twitter lists: Just what IS a Twitter list, you ask? It’s a group of Twitter users who fall under a specific category that you create. Practically speaking, it’s a way to make sure you’re not missing your favorite people’s (or companies’) posts in the chaos that is a Twitter stream. The link up there is to Twitter’s tutorial on using lists. Once they’re created, you can then create columns in HootSuite or TweetDeck to follow those lists, making it easy to stay caught up on what you determine are the most important posts.

3. LeechBlock: If you’ve ever gotten online for five minutes – only to find nearly an hour has gone by! – this Firefox add-on is for you. If you use Firefox for your browser (instead of Internet Explorer), you can download this tool to keep you from wasting away any more hours. You simply choose which sites to have blocked and when to have them blocked and voila! Instant productivity boost.

4. Dropbox: I started using this free online storage program when I worked full-time. As its website says, ” Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere…all your computers, phones and even the Dropbox website.” It really is handy if you’re working on blog posts (or any project, really) in more than one location.

5. Google Reader: If you read more than 10 blogs on a regular basis and are still hopping around to each site, this could very well change your life. Subscribe to each blog you read regularly through Google Reader, then you only need to visit one site to read the most recent posts on all your favorite sites. But beware – you could find yourself with a Reader full of goodness that you just have to read today! (If that happens, it might be a good time to consider using LeechBlock . . .)

6. Hotmail: Now, I am aware that everyone and their brother uses Gmail. I get it. It’s a Google product and you need an account to do pretty much anything with Google. And supposedly it has tools that are handy and helpful. All I know is that FOR ME, it doesn’t work. Honestly? I hate Gmail. I have two accounts and forward them both to Hotmail, where I first created an account way back in 1997. I know it’s old-school and less-than-professional, but the folder system works for me. It may not work for you, so really, my point here is that you should use whatever e-mail system works best for you. NOT what’s considered cool.

7. Google Documents: Like Dropbox, this is another way to keep documents handy, no matter where you are or what machine you’re using to work online. But Google docs also offer the option for sharing documents with others. Where was this when I was stuck doing group projects in college?

8. Skype: Of course this instant messaging system has benefits beyond blogging and social media. Chat with the long-distance grandparents, anyone? But it’s also great for collaborating – and commiserating, when the need arises – with other bloggers in a format a little more quick and casual than e-mail or even Twitter.

9. Google Calendar: See, I don’t have anything against Google products! (Just their e-mail!) I feel like I’ve tried a million systems for keeping track of and scheduling blog post ideas, but I suppose it’s closer to four or five. The most effective (and long-lasting) method I’ve found is dropping ideas into a Google calendar and following that schedule as closely as I can. Sure, sometimes I click and drag those ideas around to different dates. But that’s the beauty of it! It’s a solid, organized system, but it’s still flexible enough for real life.

10. Notebook: I don’t mean the computer kind. Nope, I keep a paper notebook around to capture ideas, titles, to-dos and more. I couldn’t live – or blog – without it!

What tools do you use to make your {social media} life easier?

Pinterest :: Love It or Hate It?

Have you heard of Pinterest? It’s a virtual bulletin board, where you can pin up all the pretty, funny, inspiring and crafty things you find on the internet. And, as with everything these days, it’s a social network – so you can check out other people’s boards, of course!

Fun, right? After all, I had an enormous bulletin board in my bedroom growing up (and it was only when my parents moved – while I was in college – that my dad learned that I had actually screwed it into the wall). And one of the things I miss about going to work in an office is having cubicle walls to display the things that make me happy.

But the problem with Pinterest is that it is so addicting. I was sick last night (you’re welcome for not elaborating on this point, much as I want to), so I asked my mom to watch Annalyn today. I lounged and relaxed and recuperated – and spent three hours off and on (off and on!) sifting through crafty projects, delicious dishes, beautiful landscapes and other things THAT I WANT.

So not only is Pinterest crazy addicting, but it also creates a deep discontent that I haven’t faced since my early blogging days. Every craft project seems just out of my mid-level scrapbooker’s reach, and every recipe appears just a tad too difficult for this average cook. And the landscapes? Surely I’ll never make it there in real life.

As you can see, Pinterest is an issue. Okay, so maybe I just HAVE issues. Either way, I should simply walk away. Right? Just close out and walk away.

*sigh*

If only I could.

Did I mention that Pinterest makes you create boards according to categories? For example, I have a craft board, a recipe board, a places board and more. Basically, it feeds my need to put things in neat little boxes and slap a label on them.

Even better if I can dredge up some funny and label them things like “I Want to Eat That Now” and “I Want to Go to There.”

Pinterest, what are you doing to me? As if blogging, Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon and Delicious weren’t enough. Now I’ve got to add pinning to my writing, sharing, posting, stumbling and tagging!

Clearly, I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. What about you? Do you pin?

This post will be linked to Things I Love Thursday at The Diaper Diaries. Because sometimes I love Pinterest. (And nobody – that I know of – has a “Things I Hate but Occasionally Love” carnival.)

Sponsor Spotlight: Only a Breath

Do you know Melanie of Only a Breath (@MelanieAnneTN on Twitter)? You might have noticed her lovely logo over there in my sidebar. I have loved getting to know Melanie through her blog over the past few months, and I wanted to introduce you to her.

Melanie writes about parenting, her faith, books and the occasional giveaway. More importantly, though, Melanie uses her blog to encourage other women, writing about life lessons learned from laundry to The Price is Right. (You know I love me some life lessons learned from the TV!) She’s also created Encouragement is Contagious, a carnival for sharing great blog posts (of others) you’ve read recently.

Here’s how Melanie describes herself:

I’m a small-town, southern girl who married a handsome pilot (and cheesehead!) from Wisconsin. We’ve discovered that sweet tea and bratwursts are a great combination, and our kids have very interesting accents, as you can imagine! We live in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee and love it here!

We have two sweet boys, Isaac and Jeremiah, who keep us laughing and who never, ever run out of energy! I work full-time as a software-developer and really enjoy my job. Yes, I’m an official “computer geek”! My friends describe me as bubbly, sweet, encouraging, fun and sunny. I asked my 6 year-old to describe Mommy, and he said “undefeated on Mario – and that’s pretty cool!”.

I would describe myself as a simple, ordinary girl who loves to laugh and is in love with an awesome God. Psalm 39 is one of my favorite Psalms and has become my ‘motto’ for living each day to the fullest to appreciate each step of my journey.

I am only a breath… and so are you, sweet friend.

And she’s not just a beautiful writer and a “computer geek.” Melanie also owns a blog design company called Elegant Custom Blogs. Seriously, I just love Melanie and Only a Breath, and I’m honored to partner with her here.

Check out her blog and tell her hello today!
