An Interview with Myself

I went to college to study journalism. I dreamed of becoming a hard-hitting, investigative reporter, perhaps even a foreign correspondent. Think Michelle Pfeiffer in Up Close & Personal.

Not long into my first semester, though, I changed majors. I’ve wondered more than once if I made the right choice and have occasionally wished I’d had the opportunity to do cool reporter things. Like interview not-so-famous bloggers.

That’s why today I’m reaching far back into my memory – or at least into my working knowledge of interview basics, thanks to a decade in public relations – to ask several hard-hitting, investigative questions of myself.

Yes, I’m doing that. (With complete props going to @annieblogs for doing it first and funnier.)

The thing is – I think you all might be wondering a few things, and you deserve answers. Hard-hitting answers.

First things first. What did you think of all this year’s season finales?
Well, I literally just finished watching the Bones finale, so I’m kind of in shock here. Without spoiling anything (just in case, like me, you recorded your favorite shows on your VCR and, unlike me, didn’t stay up late to watch them), I loved the Chuck and Castle finales but was disappointed in both endings. How I Met Your Mother was incredibly disappointing, and NCIS was confusing. Bones was shocking, but then again, maybe not.

So, in summary, I’m apparently hard to please. (Shocker!)

Okay, what is it with you and the VCR? Are you a dinosaur?
No, I’m not a dinosaur, thank you very much. I’m simply both practical and incapable of not overcomplicating fairly simple decisions. See, our VCR works just fine – as does our big, clunky, non-flat-screen TV. But HDTV won’t work on our TV, and we aren’t getting DVR without getting HDTV (or whatever it’s called). And new TVs are expensive, especially when ours works just fine.

See?

No, really, it comes down to money. What we have works, so – at least so far – we’ve kept ourselves from buying a new TV and tricking it out with the fanciest DVR service we can find. So far . . .

Weird. Anyway, speaking of TV, what are you going to watch this summer?
I am so glad you asked! After all, it saves me from writing a separate post. First and foremost, I’ll be watching Every. Single. Episode. of So You Think You Can Dance. Duh. Then I’ll be hanging out on USA, watching White Collar, Covert Affairs and Burn Notice. Yes, I am a fan of spies. And, since you made me take an oath of total and complete honesty . . .

Yes, yes, I did.
. . . I can’t wait until Warehouse13 comes back on the SyFy channel. And, much less nerdy (until I tell you it’s because the show stars my favorite Saved by the Bell star), I’m going to give Franklin & Bash a try (on TNT).

Enough about TV, already. You need to get a life!
Um, hello? You’re the one asking the questions here!

Yeah, you’re real funny. Anyway, what’s up with all the sponsored posts lately?
Ahhhhhh, you noticed, huh? I’m truly sorry about that.

I don’t get offered many paid blogging opportunities, and I consider the ones I do receive carefully. And, thanks to some input from a friend and reader a while back, I limit how often I post about brands or products. But this time, posts that I agreed to write over a period of several weeks happened to have due dates within a few days of each other.

I’m not a professional blogger by any means and I’m here to write and share and connect. But I do accept the occasional paid post opportunity because, to be honest, the small income I make from this here blog pays for my daughter’s preschool and swim lessons.

But I’m bummed out that the balance of my blog got all out of whack this month, and for that, I apologize.

All right, I guess we’ll let it slide this time. Now, whatever happened to that e-book you were talking about?
Yeah . . . about that. I haven’t finished it yet.

So you have a problem with procrastination, do you?
Is this news? And you want me to talk about it? Can we discuss it later?

Hardy-har-har. You are funny, lady.
Why, thanks!

One last question. Do you think the world is going to end tomorrow, as predicted?
Well, I certainly hope not! It’s my mom’s birthday, but we’re not celebrating until Sunday afternoon. And I have a present for her and everything. So, I’d really like to make it until then, at least.

So, maybe that wasn’t the hardest hitting interview you’ve ever read. Do you have any questions for me? What have you thought about this year’s season finales? Will you forgive me for the multiple paid posts? And do you have any big plans for the weekend?

    Great interview!

Bones was a shocker! Still don’t know what to think about that one.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Thanks, Laurie. I knew that the actress in Bones was pregnant, so in that way, it wasn’t a shocker. I kind of wished they’d revealed that plot twist differently, though. Too bad I’m not a TV writer, haha! :)

  2. Missy June says:

I’m apparently in a similar television technology stratus as you, but completely different genre. My big tube tv lords over our space, but I can’t justify the expense of a new one while it works. Oh well. I don’t even pay for cable.

I don’t mind the sponsored posts a bit – I would love to earn enough blogging to pay for preschool and swim lessons! Yay for you! Maybe for me, someday!

    Have a great weekend!

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

That’s it exactly – how can I pay for a new one when the old one works?!

  3. nikki says:

you are so funny! I don’t mind sponsored posts…what I don’t like is when bloggers ask their readers for money…say for like a down payment on a house (yes! I read a blogger who DID that, and set up a ‘donation account’…I promptly removed them from my reader).

I am much more willing to read a well-written post on why a product works for you (knowing you’re getting paid for it…and earning that pay!) then outright asking for money from readers and not working for it.

Okay, I’m off my soap box! :0 Loved the question and answer Mar!!!

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Oh my, I can’t imagine asking for people to donate to a down payment fund. (Although, now that you mention it, if only I could get away with it… !) :) Thanks for your soap box and input!!

  4. Mandy Jury says:

well…that did make me chuckle :-)
I always look forward to summer, b/c I have never “taped” a show…nor do I know how to…so in the summer, I am always pleasantly happy when I see an episode that pieces together things I missed during the season. There are only a few shows I know squat about though. Ha. And for whatever reason, ABC seems to be the only station I watch. Seriously Mandy!
But I must say, I new favorite show…mostly b/c it was on when I am available…is Body of Proof. Can relate to the star on numerous levels. Yes, that’s because deep inside I am a neuro surgeon waiting to come out, NOT! Anyway…good blog post…always enjoy them Mary.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

I had no idea you wanted to be a neurosurgeon! :) I haven’t watched Body of Proof, but it seems to have gotten good reviews. (Good thing it was on “your” station, ABC, or you might’ve missed it!) :)

  5. Sarah L says:

Why were you disappointed with the How I Met Your Mother ending? I thought it was fine. My husband and I figured out the Lilly thing early in the episode, but I liked how they wrapped back to the first episode of the season. Just curious.

As for the dinosaur TV, I’m with you on that (although we do have a newer tv and DVR). It drives me crazy to watch HGTV shows with people buying houses and complaining that he appliances are white or black or mismatched and “MUST” be replaced. Really? If it works, keep it. That’s the first step before recycling, isn’t it? Oh, and while we really like watching those house shows, it also drives me crazy that everyone is obsessed with granite countertops.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

I was disappointed with HIMYM because the whole Zooey arc has been annoying to me. And it didn’t even end well. I loved the Lily thing even though I’d figured it out. I’m not sure about the Robin and Barney thing. Or the Barney getting married thing. I will say that even though I didn’t love this season (I still LOVE the show, though – don’t get me wrong!), the story with Marshall’s and Barney’s dads were awesome. Or, you know, legendary.

And…yeah…those house shows are a bit crazy. I would know because we watch a lot of them, too!

  6. Amanda D says:

I’m with you – tube tv and vcr. And I don’t mind at all – except on Monday when I thought I hit record for HIMYM but must have really pushed play. It didn’t record. :(

I’m with you – we just watched NCIS last night and it WAS confusing. And NCIS:LA was WAY worse in the confusing place. We’re on season 2 of Bones so we’re way behind there. Sometimes it’s a little much for my stomach.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Even my husband can’t eat while watching Bones. I just avert my eyes during the gross parts! I’m such an NCIS nerd that I read a bunch of comments on the CBS forum. That left me even MORE confused! Guess we’ll get some answers this fall…or I hope we do!

Love your blog. Great interview. I think you should get on it and finish that ebook. I didn’t watch any of the shows you mentioned. I was too busy catching up on Wonder Pets, Dino Dan, Little Bear, and Franklin. I will start watching again in 10 years or so (although I do tape Dancing With The Stars, The Office, 16 and Pregnant, and Glee). Just wanted to let you know that we also have a big chunky non-HDTV and it works perfectly with my DVR. Up until last August I was still using my VCR too, but must say, that I LOVE my DVR. Just letting you know. Keep up the funny blog posts that are so entertaining.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Hmmm. I’ve wondered if Mark’s claim that our TV won’t work with a DVR (or at least the HDTV) is just another ploy to get a new TV. :) Oh my gosh, do you like Wonder Pets? Because we have one video and it drives me CRAZY!

  8. Leigh says:

Love it! As a VCR user myself, I find your honesty refreshing:) I’m totally obsessed with So You Think You Can Dance! We’ll have to tweet about it.

My weekend plans involve celebrating one year of living in Nashville! I’m going wine tasting with friends at a nearby vineyard, which should be a lot of fun. The year has flown by.

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Congratulations on your year in Nashville! I hope your wine tasting is a blast!!

  9. Shelly W. says:

I saw the funniest thing on Facebook the other day. Somebody posted about the Rapture Day coming up and someone responded: “What to wear? What to wear?” I just laughed so hard about that.

Anyway, it would be pretty cool if it actually DID happen, though, wouldn’t it?

    I loved your interview. :)

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

Haha! I didn’t wonder what to wear, but I did think twice about putting off cleaning my house. On one hand, why bother if we’re being raptured any minute. But on the other hand, I don’t want the people left behind coming into my house and thinking, “Wow, she knew Jesus but she was a slob!” ;)

  10. You, my dear, do a fabulous job at writing sponsored posts. It’s obvious that you choose them with care, and they’re well-written and funny! Honestly, I love it when I read a post that is fun and interesting and then see at the bottom that the blogger made money for writing it!

  11. I keep checking the OnDemand programing to see if Warehouse 13 has any new episodes…hahah!

It’s kind of scary to me how much we have in common, Mary. :)

    • Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says:

I never watched the first season and wish they had it online, but I haven’t been able to find it. C’mon, Warehouse 13!!
