As you might have guessed from my partnership with Mission Foods, I’m a big fan of the tortilla. It has so many uses, from burritos, tacos and fajitas to quesadillas and a recent favorite of mine, the breakfast burrito.
Then we have the fried tortillas: taquitos, chimichangas and even migas. Or, on the other hand and end of the health food spectrum, you can use tortillas as a healthy alternative to sandwich bread. (I’ll admit: I’m a big fan of Applebee’s chicken fajita roll-up!)
But you can also use tortillas even more creatively than a myriad of Mexican dishes and the occasional wrap.
One of my favorite appetizers to make is tortilla pinwheels – cream cheese, green chilies and cheddar. YUM. I also like the pinwheels other people make with ham or turkey, although I can do without the type with olives.
Recently, I discovered another way to use tortillas: PB&J Banana Burritos.
When I saw this snack on the Mission website, I thought it would be a perfect treat to try out on Annalyn. (Especially since, as I’m still getting used to our new, stay-at-home schedule, I have completely forgotten to fix her an afternoon snack – more than once.)
It’s a simple recipe: First, get a tortilla, a banana and peanut butter and jelly. Then spread a line of peanut butter and a line of jelly on the tortilla. Wrap it around the banana and voila! You’ve got an easy, tasty, fairly healthy snack!
Notes from our tortilla experiment: The snack was a little hard for Annalyn to eat. I’d suggest using a smaller banana for smaller kids. Also, I’d suggest actually putting a couple “lines” of peanut butter on the tortilla. It will help hold everything together better – and taste better!
What’s your favorite way to eat tortillas?

Whenever I have tortillas on hand, I always end up combining them with one of my favorite foods – cheese. Quesidillas are one of my favorite snacks/meals (depending on how many other ingredients I try to stuff inside!).
I’ve also been known to slice them into triangles and bake them to make chips for guacamole and salsa when in a pinch…
Cheese makes everything better, if you ask me!
Slather it with butter, sprinkle on some cinnamon/sugar mix, fold it up and pop in the the microwave for a few seconds to melt the butter. Warm, gooey, cinnamon-y deliciousness!
Oooh, I need some cinnamony deliciousness. Um..now. :)
my kids love tortillas and use them for everything
They’re so versatile, aren’t they?!
My hubby just slathers them with peanut butter, folds and enjoys on the way to work.
My daughter also likes the pizza-dilla (might have to write a post on that one). Put mozzerella and pepperoni inside and make a quesadilla.
The pizzadilla? I love it!!!
I love them anyway – but being gluten free the PBJ*B probably wouldn’t work too well on a Corn tortilla!
The standby at our house for any MOOOM I’m hungry is a cheese quesadilla!
Blessings!

Oh, yeah. My best friend is trying to do gluten-free, and I’ve realized just how MUCH gluten we eat at my house!!
I like to make sandwich wraps with lunchmeat, lettuce and cheese. I’ll have to try the peanut butter idea!
I like making little sandwich wraps for my daughter. I cut them up, and she thinks it’s a fancy treat!
Fun ideas & awesome photos – I’m hungry now! :)
We recently used tortillas to make cinnamon chips: http://devinandmegan.blogspot.com/2010/09/fruit-salsa-cinnamon-chips.html
I love PB & it’s my go-to meal/snack on full days home with my son since momma usually needs to fix quick food & eat quick so I’ll definitely be trying this!
Okay, I love cinnamon sugar stuff, so I really need to try this!
When I’m feeling sweet – thinly spread with peanut butter, sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar, rolled up and heated just a touch. For savory it’s plain cheese quesadillas, dipped in salsa and sourcream. Hm. I think it’s time for a bed-time snack.
Yum. Just…YUM.
My favorite is my version of chicken quesidillas (sp?). Chop some chicken up to bite size pieces before cooking making it easier to eat and faster to cook. Put in a large skillet. Pour in a little Mr. Ushida’s gourmet oriental sauce as it goes a long way. I know.. asian sauce in a so-called mexican dish?!… trust me … Saute the meat in it until it’s all fully cooked. In another smaller skillet lightly warm the flour toritillas. I very lightly butter one side of the tortilla to cook. Shred some mozerella cheese. Put the warm tortilla on the plate. Sprinkle some mozerella cheese on it. Then use a spoon that has the little holes in it and scoop some chicken on top. Roll like a burritto with one end closed up so that it doesn’t get too messy. Serve with a salad. Totally yummy and quick! Bon Appetite!
I’m going to admit: the oriental sauce sounds weird. But I believe you! ;)
Very clever!! We eat a lot of tortillas at our house and I love the lower carb ones available now :)
Blessings!

I am a little embarrassed about this, but sometimes for breakfast I wrap banana slices, peanut butter, honey, and chocolate chips in a tortilla. It’s got to be better for me than a donut, right?
Are you kidding? That’s WAY better than a donut! You’ve got protein, fruit and antioxidants (in the chocolate. Right? Isn’t that a thing?)!
What a delicious healthy treat. I used to like eating bananas spread with peanut butter and then rolled in graham cracker crumbs. It was excellent.
Yum! I wouldn’t have thought of that. Thanks for sharing your idea!
Yum, love all these tortilla recipes! Thanks for linking up to Tempt My Tummy Tuesday.
Of course, Lisa. Thank you for stopping by!
LOVE mission tortillas! they’re my favorite!
we do cinnamon butter with sugar
buffalo wing sauce with sliced turkey and chicken and spinach with crumbled bleu cheese
fry them into dipping strips
quesadillas
you name it ;) LOVE these ideas!
Thanks, Rachel. I’ve never done the cinnamon/sugar thing, but it sounds SO good!
I am so totally craving this snack now…and the idea someone left in the comments of adding chocolate chips sounds fabulous.
Also, another option someone mentioned was putting cinnamon sugar inside and heating it up. Yum! Thanks for linking this to Food on Fridays!
Chocolate chips make everything better, don’t they? ;)
We often make peanut butter or nutella roll ups with them. I’ve even used them as a base for an impromptu pizza.
:)

I’ve thought about pizza. Do they crisp up too much when you bake it?
Actually, they stay quite soft. Keep the sauce and cheese minimal. If you’re looking for a real pizza-like take, these aren’t for you. But our kids like a quick tortilla pizza after school.
Love ya, Mary! THanks for linking up! ;)
Mission is our favorite brand too. We use the corn for our totally home made tacos most every Saturday. Your recipe sounds like a yummy way to get your fruit, I would leave out the jelly, but my grandchildren would want the jelly.
Oh yummy this is so creative! I love all of the uses. We usually just use tortillas for burritos. I use leftovers for breakfast burritos. When I lived at home my brother and I would get a lot more creative as kids. We’d eat hot dogs in them and other experiments! hehe Thanks for sharing with Friday Firsts this week!
