UPDATE: My friend Teresa adopted the white puppy, and one of my co-workers is adopting the brown puppy. I’m so relieved that both dogs are going to good homes (and we didn’t have to take that dreaded trip to the shelter)!
Someone dumped these sweet babies in my yard on Saturday.
Chelley and Triple were down for the weekend, and of course the first thing we did when they got here was go to Walmart.
(What? Isn’t that what you do when your friends from out of town come to visit? Compare Walmarts?)
When we got back home, Triple noticed we had a couple of puppies in our shrubs out front and said, “Did you forget to tell us that you got two dogs?”
Yeah right. As both Triple and Chelley know well, I am not, as they say, a dog person. (They know this well because – long story short – Mark brought one home when they were visiting a couple years ago and pert near ruined his 30th birthday.)
But how could I resist those adorable little baby pups?
I can, don’t you worry, but it is hard! I am upset, though. Who dumps two baby puppies when there are these things called shelters that exist solely for the purpose of taking in unwanted animals?!
At first it didn’t even dawn on me that they’d been dumped. They had leashes on, so I assumed they’d escaped their home and some loving owner was franically searching for them. But Triple pointed out that they don’t have tags, and the likely explanation is that someone just decided they didn’t want them.
And apparently, our house looked like as good a place as any to leave them.
Actually, it is a pretty good spot. All of our neighbors already have dogs – we’re a real doggy neighborhood. Dogs bark so often around here that I almost don’t even hear them anymore.
Almost.
Tomorrow morning, Mark will take the puppies to the shelter. They’re super cute, friendly and young enough that I’m sure they’ll be adopted into good homes (or maybe even one home – they really love each other, these babies) quickly.
But still, even though I am not a dog person and I do not want a dog and we absolutely canNOT keep these puppies or get a dog of our own anytime soon…it just breaks my heart a little bit. How could someone look into those faces and just push them out of the car? I hope they at least slowed down. Jerks. What about you? Are you a dog person? What kind of pets do you have?

oh, they are adorable. makes me so sad tho!
i have a yorkie. its a love/hate relationship. he really loves me. and sometimes, well, i dont reciprocate. =o
i love ON him – but not always in my heart. terrible, eh?
hes the family dog that i take care of. because thats how it always ends up.
That is really weird! Chris and I once found a box of kittens when we were camping and spent a lot of time trying to figure out why they didn’t just take them to a shelter. They get adopted so fast there!
They are soooo cute! We don’t have a dog yet but are starting to look into it. Hubby said we can get one when my daughter is potty trained.
However those days when it is freezing cold and raining outside and I see my neighbor walking his dog, I think can I really do that? Because my kids aren’t old enough to do it alone yet! :)
They were Really cute, and that’s the perfect picture of them b/c they were snuggling together when we found them. :D And yay for T taking one of them! :D She’s a pet person in general. :) I’m definitely a cat person (although those puppies sure had soft fur!), but sometimes I actually wish I had a dog so I wouldn’t be so worried about walking alone, and also to force me to walk more. ;) (that’s a fleeting thought though, of course;)
Oh what a great birthday present for T :-D. Did she take the white one? You know…because she had snowflake in high school…
Um…I’ve had LOTS of pets over the years. Fish, guinea pigs, chinchillas, millipedes, hermit crabs and of course dogs. I’ve owned a total of six dogs–two since becoming an adult. Mostly hunting dogs and one mutt who was the best dog ever… (DeJour–died last May :-( )
I probably would have talked my hubby into keeping one of them…they are SOOO cute!
yes, the white one, HM — you know her so well! ;) (i think she was also the calmer of the 2 though:)
Tam, I have a cat like that. Peanut is so friendly…but sometimes it’s just too much. Sometimes, I don’t WANT to pet her!
Busy – my thoughts exactly!
Well, I was a dog person until I got a dog! Lol! Noooot really. I’ve had two cats and they are so easy. I love how independent they are. So I finally got the yellow lab that I’d been dreaming of for years, and I cannot tell you how many times during that first year I asked myself, “WHAT WAS I THINKING???” But…. she is really the sweetest, most lovable companion and has brought much joy to our little family.
B, you’re right – cats are WAY easier than dogs!! That’s one of the main reasons we don’t have a dog!
hello!
oh these babies are too cute… i’m glad you helped find them homes. i was always a cat person, until my husband left for bosnia with the army for 7 months, and our dog-for-protection decided to stick to me like velcro. i sware she sensed he was gone and knew to take care of me. i fell in love with that dog. now we have two, one mutt (the best kind), and one loving boxer…
I’m glad you found them homes. With the current economy, shelters across the country are bursting at the seams with perfectly wonderful and adoptable dogs. Problem is, they’re coming in faster than they’re being adopted. Animals are being given up at higher rates than we’ve seen in a while. More dogs and cats are just being abandoned on the street as well, because many shelters charge a small fee for owner surrenders. Most people are tightening the purse strings, and a new pet is an added expense most are not able or currently willing to take on. With home and job losses, the animals are feeling the pinch right along with the humans. Chances are, even though normally these adorable pups would be snapped up in a heartbeat at the shelter, they may have spent a long time there, or worse, may have been euthanised after a brief stay in order to make space the new dogs coming in, despite their being so cute and adoptable.
Huh — based on that last comment, it looks like angels were overseeing the puppies being placed in your yard on Saturday, Mary! :) It ended up working out so perfectly! :D
