Aruba, Jamaica, Ooohh, I Wanna Take Ya…

Being responsible is not always the fun thing to do.

I realize that’s an obvious statement, but it needed to be said. I want to celebrate my 30th birthday and our 10th anniversary by going to an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. Is that asking too much?

Okay, so maybe it is. At least, it is when you have too much debt and want to someday (soon?) buy a bigger house and have more kids. And when you want to travel to another city to take weekend classes to change your career. And when you’re trying to be a better steward of all that God has blessed you with.

[Insert heavy, dramatic, unnecessary sigh here.]

So, instead, I’m looking at San Diego. There’s still a beach. And lots of fun things to do. And oh yeah, it would cost about $1,000 less than Jamaica! Has anyone else been to San Diego before?

$1000 is a LOT of money. San Diego sounds like a great alternative. Although, is there a beach closer to you that would be even cheaper?

  2. HonorMommy says:

I’ve never been there…but I hear the zoo is fantastic! :-D

  3. hobbitsister says:

very, very briefly. we were vacationing in l.a. and went to san diego as a side trip. we went to the zoo – which was fun, although it wasn’t much different than any other big zoo. i wanted to visit some of the old spanish missions, but we just didn’t have time.

i love southern california, though – the warm weather, the palm trees, the ocean…i’d love to go back!

  4. melilotnfosco says:

never been – but ocean and beaches sound nice :)

  5. chelleybutton says:

you’re taking weekend classes in CHICAGO??!?

oh: i agree with hobbitsister (have had the same experience there)

  6. chelleybutton says:

and i like that song :)

  7. photoqueen says:

Considering we live smack dab in the middle of the country, there really aren’t any ocean beaches “close” to us!

I’ve heard good things about the zoo, too!

Chelley, I haven’t started the classes yet, but I want to. They cost a lot of $$$, though, plus 2 days off work. (And to clarify, it’s 5 weekends total, not like it’s every single weekend!)

  8. Kimberly says:

oh yeah, I guess so. I live mid-continent here too, but we have a MASSIVE lake just north of us that is basically like an ocean, but without the sharks! You guys just have a bunch of little lakes, yes? Then the ocean would definitely be something different and fun.

  9. Amy Wright says:

oooh, may I recommend Disney? We celebrate most occasions there. :)

  10. Brenda says:

    I live in San Diego.

  11. photoqueen says:

Hi Amy! I don’t think we’re taking Photobaby, so I don’t know about going to Disney. Because I definitely want to take her.

Brenda – I’ll have to get some travel and tourist tips from you – I didn’t realize you live in SD!!!

  12. chelleybutton says:

ooh, how long are you planning on being gone? you’re gonna miss photobaby!

  13. photoqueen says:

Yep, we’ll miss her all right!! But we’ll probably just be gone for 5 days. At least, that’s my plan. I haven’t asked my mom for sure if she can watch her during her spring break!!

  14. Amy Wright says:

I acknowledge that the country is full of wonderful places to visit – and I would definitely go to San Diego if I had the chance, but the nice thing about Disney is that it’s a different trip every time you go…there are TONS of things you can’t do with small children, and there are beaches (sort of) and pools and … we’re going in October without the kids. :)

  15. chelleybutton says:

i'm just a big kid & i love disney too :) (but i'm not a big beach person, at least not for a long period of time;)

  16. photoqueen says:

Hmmm…Amy, I don’t know. I guess I’m hesitating because I had a bad experience last time I was at Disney. Mainly because it was JULY. In FLORIDA. All I remember is sweating. Lots and lots of sweating.

  17. chelleybutton says:

well, yes, there is that — i prefer the other disney because of that :) (plus, california is cool:) (i’m not trying to press disney on you though, just commenting;)

  18. Amy Wright says:

unlike Chelleybutton, I am totally trying to press disney on you. specifically for one weekend in October… :)

yes, July at Disney is cruel and unusual punishment. Try October. But I hear San Diego is nice all year long.

  19. photoqueen says:

According to the SD website, they do have nice weather most the year. (Brenda? Is this true?)

What weekend in October, Amy? And are you talking about THIS October?!

  20. Amy Wright says:

Yes, this October! But, chances are, we'll be there next October, also. :)

We're going for the Food & Wine Festival.

  21. photoqueen says:

Oh, I just looked that up – it looks fun…and delicious! :) Maybe we’ll have to do NEXT October!

And you’ve convinced me to at least think about Orlando…I did a little research today. I’m going to have to ask Mark what he prefers – FL or SD. (Both are well below the cost of Jamaica. Sadly.)
